Essay Contest: How has the Supreme Court affected your life?

This spring, the Kent Memorial Library will host a series entitled “The Supreme Court in American Life”. In conjunction with this noteworthy event, the series’ organizers are sponsoring an essay competition open only to Housatonic Valley Regional High School students. Cash prizes will be awarded in two categories: a $100 prize for 9 and 10 grade students, and a $500 prize for 11 and 12 grade students.

In a formally developed essay of 500 words, each applicant will consider how the Supreme Court has affected his or her life. In preparing to compose the essay, consider the vital role the Court has played in all aspects of American life, including Civil Rights, education, privacy and free speech. Undeniably, every American has been impacted by the individual members of the Supreme Court, their decisions, or the manner in which these decisions have been interpreted.

Essayists are encouraged to work with their Social Studies and English teachers when developing and editing this composition. The final draft must be submitted to your Social Studies or English teacher by March 1, 2010. Winners will be announced on May 15, 2010 and prizes will be awarded on June 6, 2010.
