Ms. Farrell is a veteran educator and administrator who taught English in the New Milford Public Schools for 28 years, was assistant principal at Sarah Noble School for five years and later taught at Immaculate High School.

“We are delighted that Jacqui Farrell has joined LVG and we think she will excel as our director,” said Allan Priaulx, President of the board of the group that teaches English as a second language and provides other literacy services to area residents. “We are also thrilled that Anne Maitland will continue to work with LVG, focusing on the areas that interest her most – developing new programs and creating our long-term vision. As our founder along with Rita Guariglia, Anne is really responsible for all our progress in the past five years, enabling us to train more than 160 volunteer tutors and bring the gift of English to over 400 newcomers to our region.”

Ms. Farrell is a Celebration of Excellence Award winner and has presented education workshops at a National Council of Teachers of English Convention and other groups. She is the author of several articles on education and a young adult non-fiction history of the Great Depression for Lucent Press. The New Milford resident holds a BA in English from Annhurst College, an MALS degree in American Studies from Wesleyan University, and a Sixth-Year Diploma in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Connecticut.

Literacy Volunteers on the Green is a non-profit organization comprised of volunteer tutors who teach English free of charge to willing students of all ages and backgrounds living in Litchfield County and northern Fairfield County. Students acquire basic reading skills, learn to speak English and receive an introduction to American culture, which helps many attain citizenship. The company has a 501 [c] (3) designation from the IRS. For further information please visit www.lvg-ct.org.

Congratulations to Jacqueline Farrell and to Literacy Volunteers on the Green as Ms. Farrell suceeds Anne Maitland as Executive Director. Anne, an area resident, poured her heart and soul into the establishment of LVG and its success is a testament to her dedication. Kent has been well served by LVG and its cadre of local volunteers. The weekly English class at Kent Center School, primarily for KCS mothers, has been a huge success. It was started with Ron Viafore’s strong support and continues with current principal Rima McGeehan’s equally strong encouragement. Other classes, some of them one-on-one tutorials, take place in Kent on a weekly basis.
