Snapshot Day

On Thursday, February 18, libraries all over Connecticut will be taking a “snapshot” — collecting information to capture the impact that Connecticut libraries have on their communities on a typical day. We’re calling it “Snapshot Day.”

In addition to its regular visitors who use the Library for computer services, to borrow materials and ask questions, The Kent Memorial Library will be hosting cookbook author, Terry Walters, author of “Clean Food.” She will do a cooking demonstration as well as a book signing, at 7:00 pm on Feb. 18. The program is free and open to the public; however, registration is required by contacting the library at (860) 927-3761 or kmlinfo@biblio.org. You may also stop by in person to sign-up. Seating is limited. Our Children’s librarians, as part of their regular outreach activities, will be visiting the Kent Community Nursery School, as well as having a “Lunch Bunch” at 12:15pm. All visitors will be asked to comment on what their library means to them.

Snapshot Day is a joint project of the Connecticut Library Association, the Connecticut State Library, and the Connecticut Library Consortium. It is based on a project of the same name created by the New Jersey State Library and the New Jersey Library Association. The aim is to encourage libraries all over Connecticut to collect basic data – how many people use the library on a given day, how many people use computers, attend programs, etc. Connecticut’s libraries are busier than ever these days, with people coming not only to check out books, but use computers, look for a job, or attend the many programs that libraries offer. All across the state, libraries are the cornerstones of their communities, places where people come together to visit, learn and share ideas.

On February 18, we hope to capture a slice of life of Connecticut’s libraries. Please visit the Snapshot website, www.snapshotctlib.wordpress.com to find out more about this exciting project. Better yet, visit the Kent Memorial Library on Thursday, Feb. 18 and become a part of Snapshot Day 2010! Tell us what you love about your library and why it’s important.
